Product Description

3D raised printing is the dynamic new printing option that makes designs literally pop off your card! Printed on 16pt coated card stock then laminated on both sides with 1.5mil scuff resistant, soft velvet laminate, the end result is a substantially thick 19pt card, giving an unreal high-end feeling and look. Raised foil and raised spot UV is perfect for highlighting logos, text, images or photos. With a 50 micron raised depth, you can feel the raised sections clearly in your hands. We offer silver, gold and holographic foil as well as spot UV on our 3.5″ x 2″ US standard business cards.

Please note, you must submit a raised foil mask file along with the artwork file, in a vector format using 100% black to show where the raised section should be applied (white areas will indicate no foil).

Compliance & Technical Standards for Raised Foil Business Cards

Material & Process Compliance

  • Substrate: Multi-layer construction of premium uncoated or silk-coated cardstocks ranging from 32 pt to 48 pt total thickness. Duplex cards use two laminated sheets; triplex cards include a colored core layer between face stocks. All papers FSC-certified and compliant with ISO 536 (grammage) and ISO 2471 (opacity) standards.
  • Printing Method: CMYK offset or digital press, with optional spot color or white ink. Raised foil variants produced using UV spot gloss underlay with heat-applied metallic foil layer per ISO 12647-2 color reproduction standards.
  • Lamination Process: Layers bonded using pH-neutral, solvent-free adhesives meeting ASTM D6862 (peel resistance) and ASTM D2564 (adhesive performance) standards. Alignment tolerance maintained across layers to ±0.25 mm.
  • Foil & Raised Effects: Hot or cold foil stamped onto UV polymer raised base; metallic finishes available in gold, silver, rose gold, red, blue, and holographic variants. Foil materials RoHS-compliant and recyclable under PET separation process.
  • Compliance: Produced under ISO 14001 certified manufacturing systems using low-VOC coatings and environmentally responsible adhesives.

Dimensional & Build Standards

Attribute Nominal Tolerance Notes
Card Size 3.5″ × 2″ (U.S. Standard) ±0.5 mm Alternate formats available on request
Total Thickness 32 pt – 48 pt ±5 % Dependent on paper combination and adhesive bond thickness
Layer Alignment ±0.25 mm Registered across full card area during lamination
Foil Application Height 0.05–0.15 mm ±0.02 mm Measured from base substrate on raised foil models
Edge Core Centering ±0.25 mm For triplex cards; color core alignment tolerance

Environmental & Safety Disclosures

  • Material Safety: Papers, foils, and adhesives are free of PVC, phthalates, and heavy metals; meet ASTM D4236 labeling requirements.
  • Recyclability: Duplex and triplex cards recyclable under mixed paper stream. Foil layers recoverable via delamination in specialized recycling systems.
  • Ink & Coating: UV coatings and polymer raised finishes low-VOC per ASTM D3960; foil adhesives REACH-compliant.
  • Storage: Store between 18–25 °C and 35–55 % RH. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent foil oxidation or adhesive distortion.

Quality Assurance & Color Management

  • Color Accuracy: ICC profile management for both coated and uncoated face stocks. ΔE2000 color variance maintained ≤3 across print runs.
  • Foil Registration: Checked per 25-unit interval for positional accuracy; tolerance ±0.25 mm.
  • Lamination Bond Test: Random samples undergo peel strength verification ≥2.5 N/cm under ASTM D1876.
  • Surface Inspection: Each batch verified for foil adhesion, raised finish height, and edge cleanliness.
  • Core Alignment: For triplex variants, color core centered via laser alignment calibration before pressing.

File Preparation Alignment

  • Bleed: 3 mm (0.125″) bleed; maintain a 3 mm safe area inside trim.
  • Resolution: Minimum 300 dpi at full size; 600 dpi recommended for foil mask precision.
  • Color Mode: CMYK only; provide foil mask layer as a 100% K vector layer named Foil.
  • Raised Foil Areas: Avoid thin serif typefaces under 0.5 pt stroke width; maintain minimum 1 mm spacing between adjacent foil zones.
  • Fonts & Lines: Convert to outlines; ensure vector artwork alignment across print and foil layers.

Legal & Marking

All design elements, trademarks, and printed material are reproduced under client license. Batch numbers and lamination identifiers are tracked internally for process validation and do not appear on final products. Manufacturing conforms to ASTM D685 (paper durability), ISO 9706 (archival permanence), and ASTM D6862 (bond adhesion) standards.

Raised Foil Business Cards FAQs

What does “raised foil” mean on these business cards?

Full-color cards are laminated, then a clear raised polymer is applied where you want shine, and a metallic foil (gold, silver, or holographic) is transferred onto those raised areas, creating a tactile, 3D metallic effect.

What material are they printed on?

16pt coated cardstock with a protective lamination. The lamination adds durability, smoothness, and helps the raised foil adhere cleanly.

What size and thickness do you offer?

Standard U.S. business card size, 3.5″ x 2″, on 16pt stock with lamination. Custom sizes aren’t listed for this product.

Can I print both sides and choose foil on one or both?

Yes. Options include: print both sides with foil front only, print both sides with foil both sides, print front only with foil front only, or print front only with foil both sides.

Which foil colors are available and how do they look over print?

Silver, Gold, and Holographic. Foils are opaque and reflective, CMYK artwork beneath the foil won’t show through.

How should I set up artwork for raised foil?

Provide a separate 100% black (K) vector foil mask for foil areas. Keep foil elements bold (avoid hairline details) and leave a small safety from the trim to prevent edge lift.

Can I combine Raised Foil and Raised Spot UV on the same card?

No. This product treats them as separate effect choices, select Raised Foil or Raised Spot UV for a given order.

What quantities and turnaround are available?

Minimum 100 cards; offered in set quantities up to 1000. Typical production time is 5–7 business days.

How durable is the raised foil in daily use?

The foil bonds to the laminated surface for good wear resistance. Avoid bending or scraping the raised areas; store cards in a case to minimize scuffing.

Is raised foil suitable for small text or QR codes?

Not ideal. Use foil for larger logos and accents. Keep small text and scannable items (like QR codes) in standard CMYK print for clarity.
